In much the same way that bacteria develop resistances to antibiotics, creating "superbugs," insects are developing resistances to "insect-proof" crops, creating a whole other type of superbug. This is not a good thing for us, and raises a lot of questions about the way that Big Ag does things.
Most notably, most of the bug-resistant crop seed comes from Monsanto, which has a tendency to react to problems with its extra-expensive, specialized crops by promising future innovations that will make crops extra-resistant.

At a certain point, it's hard to avoid the sense that we're getting ourselves into a never-ending arms race between crops and bugs--a harmful cycle for farmers and eaters but a fabulously profitable one for companies like Monsanto. Unfortunately, bug-resistant crops are only half of the story.

Weeds are also becoming immune to Monsanto's special-blend herbicide, Roundup. In some cases, this has forced farmers to resort to older, possibly more environmentally-unsafe herbicides. Which isn't to say that GM crops are all bad, but it's important to keep an eye on the unintended consequences of our food system--especially with the problem-filled farm bill coming up through congress.
