The grieving girl goes to stay with her grandmother, a psychic medium in the town of Lily Dale, NY. The romance and relationships are quite PG. The narrative jumps ahead a little in a few places at the end of one chapter Calla decides she needs to leave Lily Dale, but time has passed before the opening of the next chapter, and now she thinks she wants to stay but I found that more realistic than annoying.
Difficult and nuanced decisions are seldom clear-cut. Lily Dale is a real place, dealt with respectfully by the author who grew up nearby.
Of course, I immediately went to buy the next book, so I suppose it did its job. It felt more like the season finale of a TV show than the end of a book in a series. The plot deals with several mysteries with some scary and slightly graphic moments. Add this to very real presence of ghosts in the story, and there are a couple of possible anxiety triggers for many kids.
I found this a compelling read and would highly recommend it to any reader prepared to deal with the themes of loss and the nature of life after death. It would have terrified me and led to sleepless nights when I was a tween, but as an adult I very much enjoyed it. I enjoyed this novel as well, although it further confirms my initial idea that it will be a few years before I suggest these to my daughter. Believing picks up where Awakening leaves off, to the point where I think you only get a complete novel if you read them together.
It also ups both tension and violence—the murdered teenager from the first book continues to appear to Calla, and the murderer becomes a point of view character, very similar to many adult romantic thrillers. Calla is attacked in her home and she stabs the murderer with a kitchen knife—this is thankfully not drawn out, which I appreciate.
However, Calla and her grandmother decide not to tell her dad about this. I understand that some secrets are inevitable and perhaps even healthy, but this seems like a big one.
At one point, my reading light started blinking and it freaked me out so much I had trouble sleeping that night the book suggests that spirits often make themselves known through electronics. An issue that was building for me through the last book almost became a deal breaker in this one—Calla insists on keeping secrets from everyone, often facing things beyond her understanding alone, despite having a pretty good support group of friends and family. This novel ties up all the loose ends.
Awakening (Lily Dale Series)
It's a serial story but even then Corsi Staub didn't need to rush. She could have added another hundred pages for us to really get to know the characters, to learn the back-story in more detail. This reads more like one of those elementary school "chapter books" than it does a young adult novel.
I only give it 3 stars because the topic is interesting to me. Calla doesn't understand the strange people who inhabit Lily Dale until her grandmother confesses that Lily Dale is the home of psychics and other mystics and that she is one of them. Calla thinks her grandmother has gone off the deep end until strange things begin to happen. Calla starts to wonder if she might be psychic just like her grandmother.

She begins to question the life she lived with her mother and consider that her mother may have lied to her about much of her past. This is the first book of the Lily Dale series. I picked this book up in the clearance section of at Half Price Books and quickly realized what a bargain I had gotten.
This is a wonderful book with a little bit of danger, romance, and adventure all rolled into one exciting book. Mrslabraden May 31, When seventeen-year-old Calla's mother suddenly dies, she goes to stay with her psychic grandmother in Lily Dale, a spiritualist community in western New York, where she discovers some disconcerting secrets about her practical, down-to-earth mother, and realizes that she herself may also have some psychic abilities.

The five books, which all-told cover about one year of Calla's life, were devoured in a week. The story is a set of tightly woven subplots about relationships: mother and daughter; father and daughter; friends and boy friends; and how they connect to our past and our present, as well as guide our future. Calla is the main character, but her grandmother Odelia is what makes the story work. Throughout the story, Calla faces questions about what her life will be like without her mom. As she begins to unravel her mom's history she is drawn to Odelia as a connection to her mom, but also as someone who might help her understand what is happening and how to reach her.
Pros: This book has everything a teen boy or girl could eant: fast pace, mystery, characters going through what they're going through, and realism.
Who can edit:
She soon learns that her grandmother is a psychic in a town of psychics. How could her mother never have mentioned that? Well, it is only three weeks. She can handle it for three weeks. But soon Calla begins to understand that her gammy is not the only psychic in the house. I really enjoyed this young adult paranormal mystery. Calla is a typical teen, but one who has had a terrible experience that she needs to face and resolve. Her grandmother, Odelia, is a hoot.
This is a very entertaining read. The writing is simple but good.

I felt I was in the town. Is it this gift that is making her suspect that her mother's death was more than an accident, or is it just an overactive imagination?
