1. Activate the Anointing by Focusing on God’s Word

The house was filled with the fragrance. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor. The cost of the Anointing is Pure devotion and humility. This shows her pure devotion and humilty to Christ.

What is the anointing? What does it mean to be anointed? |

The anointing is costly. It is no cheap grace. It is of high value therefore, it comes with a high cost. In our culture and times this is a hard pill to swallow. American Christianity has a tendency to worship family over Jesus instead of worshipping Jesus with the family. It is the pearl of great price to buy which the merchant will sell all his goods. It is the kingly rule of Christ, for whose sake a man will pluck out the eye which causes him to stumble; it is the call of Jesus Christ at which the disciple leaves his nets and follows him.

THE ANOINTING by Bishop Dag Heward-Mills

To Worship is to attribute worth to someone or something. When we worship God we are declaring that He is worthy of our attention and devotion. It said that after Mary anointed the feet of Jesus that the house was filled with fragrance of that perfume. Every word, thought, and deed should be a sweet aroma to Christ. A fragrance rising up to heaven. It should be a pleasant smell in the nostrails of God.

Frankincense & Myrrh – Healing & Intercession

When you get around certain people there is a certain glow to them that gives you an extra pep in your step and the light and glory of God just radiates from them. Then there are others.

That you kind of avoid. They have stench of death to them that suck the life and joy right out of you when you are around them. They are always negative and critical. There were two reasons why Jesus was anointing by Mary. In preparation for his burial. It was Jewish custom to wash and anoint the feet of a guest because most of the time they came in from the dusty streets wearing sandals. Our anointing symbolizes a death to ourself and a life unto God. The cost of that anointing was the very death of Christ that purchased eternal life for us.

Sometimes what we think as a preparation for our burial is a preparation for battle. A crisis comes into our lives and we think, this is it we are finished.

But, scripture tells us time and time again that hard times come not to defeat us but to prepare us. Their purpose is to strengthen our character and resolve so we can become experienced soldiers in the army of God equipped for battle. We have an enemy who is like a roaring lion seeking out those to steal, kill, and destroy.

We are all on different parts of our journey with God. But, no matter where you are at, God has you still living and breathing so He must still have a purpose for you to fulfill and cross to bear. God says to pick up your daily and die daily to ourselves. This involves walking in Gods strength and not our own. This involves continuely filling ourselves with the Holy Spirit and having our eyes on the prize of Jesus Christ who is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him.

If death should be the result of the illness, God and his Church assist the journey into new life by offering the Eucharist as Viaticum. Just as the Eucharist nourished us throughout life, so it is nourishment for our travels into new life.

We see Jesus and the Apostles performing many acts of healing in the Gospels and in the Acts of the Apostles. We may be tempted to believe that God no longer heals since physical healings are less frequent these days, but healings still take place in remarkable numbers. Today, they are often done through the mediation of the medical professions. The prayers address the sick person as a whole, which includes all aspects of our human life. Many times, the spiritual healing is far more dramatic than the physical. And sometimes this takes the form of an increased ability to accept the physical illness and its suffering.

Death is a reality of our human life, and we need not try to deny that fact when it becomes obvious or inevitable. In such cases, the Sacrament of Anointing prepares a person for death, which includes spiritual healing and the forgiveness of sins.

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick

If death is imminent, the Eucharist is offered as Viaticum food for the journey. As always, the grace of the sacrament and the wisdom and abilities of human nature work together when we face serious illness. God works just as effectively through the medical professionals as he does through the sacraments.

To ignore it would be tantamount to ignoring the doctor. Canon law states that anyone who is in some danger of death from an illness or from old age can receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. CIC , can. The code then immediately offers this caveat: If there is any doubt as to the seriousness of the illness or condition, the sacrament is to be received cf. The Catechism of the Catholic Church adds that it is also appropriate to receive the sacrament prior to surgery cf. CCC , It must also be remembered that the sacrament is a sacrament of the living.

If someone tried to operate in one of those capacities without the anointing, it always resulted in judgment. When Aaron and his sons were anointed in Leviticus 8, it set them in order to operate in the ministry of the priesthood.

Anointing of the Sick

That anointing was precious, and the oil mixture used for that anointing was not to be made by anyone else or used for a ny common purpose on penalty of death! It was sacred for consecration to the priesthood and to all the items used by the priesthood for their work Exodus Although the anointing of the oil itself was outward, there were spiritual implications attached to that oil that was with them for the rest of their lives. The oil eventually dried or washed off or faded away.

But the authority that the anointing gave them was empowerment for a lifetime. They were marked by God, set apart and empowered for a purpose. When the prophet Samuel anointed the first king, Saul, everyone knew what that anointing meant. It gave him authority to rule all of Israel. It was a symbol that he had been chosen by God and set apart for his task as king. When the same prophet anointed David in 1 Samuel 16, all present knew exactly what was happening.

Those who carried that anointing were required to live a life worthy of that calling. Those who carried the anointing but lived any way they desired brought guilt upon themselves.

Remember the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phineas? They carried the anointing for the priesthood upon them. But theyt used their God-given place of leadership and authority to rape women, steal offerings, and exercise manipulative control for self-gain. They did not live a life worthy of the anointing, and God killed them both in one day because of it! Because of the death and resurrection of Jesus, the anointing that comes from God is no longer limited to a select few.

We could take time to talk about the priesthood of all believers, the prophetic nature of the Church, and the fact that we will serve as kings under Jesus, but that is a whole other discussion!
